LjjSpeaks: Do we choose or do others choose for us?

I just finished Nelson DeMill's Plum Island - and on page 985 of the Ipad edition it states:

A centruy ago, people occassionaly came to a crossroads in their lives and had to choose a direction. Today, we live inside of microchips with a million paths opening and closing every nanosecond. What's worse, someone else is pushing the buttons.
